THE CHURCH ROOMS

WHITTLESFORD, CAMBRIDGE
A CONVERSION OF A FORMER
PUBLIC BUILDING

The Old Church Rooms had served various purposes in the past such as being a place of worship and more recently, providing nursery facilities for preschool children.

The building had fallen into decline, although much of its original 1930's character was still intact. We decided against the availble planning permission of a unnecessary remodelling and chose instead to preserve the village charm of the original building by working with its best attributes such as a vaulted ceiling with enormous exposed beams, twin fireplaces and the original floorboards. The wonderful old double workshop in the secluded gardens added to the feeling of a charming cottage with lots of character.

The end result was a very special cottage consisting of an open plan living and dining area with a screened off kitchen zone all set beneath the spectacular vaulted ceiling. Well appointed bedrooms were created and given period style picture rails and original joinery patterns were re-produced. all the woodwork was left partially exposed beneath a 'white over-wash'. The original floorboard were returned to their former glory and roof lights were added to throw light into the deepest reaches of the room.

Later an extension was added (see below) which provided two big bedrooms.
